Perme Less Lotion containing Permethrin
BP 5% and Crotamiton BP 10% is primarily used to treat scabies and
relieve associated pruritus (itching).
Benefits & Uses of Perme Less Lotion
Ø Scabies Treatment: The primary
use is the treatment of scabies infestations, a contagious condition caused by
tiny mites that burrow under the skin. Permethrin kills the mites and their
eggs.
Ø Itching Relief: Crotamiton
provides relief from itching and skin irritation. This is important because
itching can persist for up to several weeks after the mites are dead due to an
allergic reaction to the dead mites.
Ø Other Skin
Irritations: It is also indicated for the relief of itching caused by
sunburn, dry eczema, itchy dermatitis, allergic rashes, hives, nettle rash,
chickenpox, insect bites and stings, and heat rashes.
Key Ingredients of Perme Less Lotion
The active ingredients are:
Ø Permethrin BP 5%: A synthetic
pyrethroid that is a potent insecticidal and scabicidal agent. It works by
disrupting the nervous system of the mites, leading to their paralysis and
death.
Ø Crotamiton BP 10%: An
antiparasitic agent that also has antipruritic (anti-itching) properties.
Ø Inactive Ingredients: The lotion
base typically contains various inactive ingredients such as water, mineral
oil, propylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, lanolin, and benzyl
alcohol, which help in the lotion's application and stability.
How to Use Perme Less Lotion
Always follow the specific instructions from your doctor or the
product label, as application methods can vary slightly.
Ø Preparation: Take a warm
bath or shower and dry the skin thoroughly. The skin should be clean, cool, and
dry before application.
Ø Application: Apply a thin
layer of the lotion to the entire body surface from the neck down, paying
special attention to skin folds, between the fingers and toes, under the nails,
armpits, and groin. For children under 2 years or elderly patients, the face,
ears, and scalp may also need treatment, avoiding the immediate area around the
eyes and mouth.
Ø Leave On: The lotion
should be left on for at least 8 to 12 hours (often overnight). Reapply to
hands if they are washed during this period.
Ø Wash Off: After the required
time, wash off the lotion thoroughly with soap and water and use a clean towel
to dry off.
Ø Hygiene: To prevent
reinfection, all clothing, bed linen, and towels used within the last few days
should be washed in hot water (60°C or higher) or sealed in a plastic bag for
at least 3-7 days.
Ø Repeat (if necessary): A second
application may be necessary after 7 days if live mites or lice are still
present, but do not apply more than twice without medical advice.
Side Effects of Perme Less Lotion
Most side effects are mild and transient.
Ø Common Side Effects:
v Burning, stinging,
or tingling sensation (this often occurs in scabies patients soon after
application).

(erythema), or a rash. (Note: Itching can persist after treatment due to the body's
reaction to dead mites and does not necessarily mean treatment failure).

swelling.
Ø Serious Side Effects

v Signs of a severe
allergic reaction (e.g., difficulty breathing, swelling of the
face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness).
v Infected or
pus-filled areas of the skin.
Ø Precautions:

eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. Rinse immediately with water if
